How to Make Naan – The Popular Indian Flatbread

Naan Bread served with chicken Tandoori

Naan bread is maybe the best known Indian side dish.

Naan is the one of the most flavorful and popular Indian breads. Naans work well with just about anything!

Ingredients

  • 25 oz. active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions

In a large bowl, place the yeast in warm water and allow it to dissolve. Let the yeast stand for 10 minutes, until frothy. Add in the sugar, milk, egg, salt, and enough flour to make soft dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place the dough in greased bowl, cover with a damp piece of cloth, and set aside. Allow the dough to stand until it has doubled in volume. Knock down the risen dough and divide it into small portions about the size of a golf ball. Roll the dough portions into balls. Cover the dough balls with a tea towel and set aside until they have doubled in size.

While the dough balls have been set to rise, preheat grill to high. Lightly grease the grill. Roll out a dough ball into a thin circle. Place the dough circle on the grill and cook for about 2 minutes until light brown and puffed. Brush the uncooked side with butter and flip over. Now brush the cooked side with butter and cook for another 3 minutes. Take the naan out of the grill and repeat the process for the remaining balls of dough.

Tips

Serve Naan bread with Butter Chicken Masala or Lamb Palak on the side and your favorite raita.
